To answer the question can you eat leftover rice?

The answer is of course yes! as long as the rice is not yet spoiled or has a sour smell. The rate of spoilage gradually increases if the temperature exceeds room temperature. If 2 hours have been passed without refrigerating the rice chances are it will become spoiled already so it becomes unsafe for consumption.

Refrigerating leftover rice is a good way to prevent it from spoiling but don't let it stay in the refrigerator for about three to four days because chances are it will not taste good anymore.

What to do with leftover rice?

1. Fried Garlic Rice or Sinangag

fried garlic rice

There are many ways how to preserve leftover rice. Here in the Philippines leftover rice from the previous night is typically cooked like fried rice the following morning. I remember my grandmother woke up early and head to the kitchen to cook the leftover rice and it is typically paired with dried fish with tomato and soy sauce dip.

There are so many leftover rice recipes out there but there is a simple recipe called sinangag or garlic rice. With few ingredients fried garlic rice is very simple to cook you just need to saute garlic and onion in a little amount of oil. Just add the leftover rice until it is cooked. This leftover rice dish is perfect for breakfast, you can also do variations by adding meat bits or shrimp bits to add additional flavor.

2. Puff Rice

Another way to repurpose the leftover rice is by making it rice puffs. Rice puffs can be seasoned with salt or sugar depending on your preference. The rice puffs are crispy and fluffy types of snacks that kids will definitely love.

The process is simply drying the leftover rice and gently spreading it on a sheet of absorbent paper and letting it dry for a whole day. Just be careful that you don't place it in a windy environment because the rice being dried will be carried away

Alternatively, if you don't have all this time or you just don't want to wait, bake it in the oven for 5 hours at 50° degrees.

Once the rice is completely dried it's time to cook it. Just grease the baking tray with oil or butter and spread the rice grains evenly and cook for two(2) hours at 50 degrees Celcius to one 125 degrees Farentheight in a preheated oven.

After the cooking time, your rice will only have to cool down and will be ready to taste.

3. Food for pets

If no one wants to consume leftover rice it can still be good food for your pets like dogs or cats. Here in the Philippines, our local breed of dog called Aspins and cat is not too picky when it comes to food. Just make sure that the leftover rice we give to our pet is not spoiled you can also add a leftover dish to make it more appealing to them.

Some dog breeds do not want rice as their food so observe it first before giving too much rice. And see to it that it will not harm your pet.

In summary

Leftover rice cannot be avoided but we must see to it that it will never go to the trash bin frequently. There are many ways that it can be repurposed it just need some creativity to make them into delicious rice meals. Because in the Philippines we have a belief that food is grace from God so it must not go to waste.
